Projects in progress

‘A Computational Dynamic Analysis of Public Debates on Politics, Aesthetics and Taste’ (FONDECYT, Chile No. 3180096)
Role: Principal Investigator
Implementation period: 2018-2021
Description: The main aim of this project is to measure in what extent public debates, with a particular focus on political, aesthetic and taste debates, show the specific characteristics of different types of disagreement distinguished in the literature, and if they show significant differences depending on the field of application. The particular aims of the project are organized by three main hypotheses to be explored: i) the possibility of political, aesthetic and taste disagreements being forward- looking, deep or evaluative disagreements. I will check in different corpora built from public pieces of discourse if they show, and to what extent, the particular characteristics of these disagreements; ii) the potential significant differences in the type of disagreement depending on the field of application. Namely, if one type of disagreement, if forward- looking, deep or evaluative disagreement, occurs more often in political, aesthetic or taste disputes; iii) the possibility of significant differences in the coordination fostered between speakers when the disagreement is forward-looking, deep or evaluative. I will consider if the dispute is a metalinguistic disagreement or an evaluative disagreement makes a difference in the positive consequences that follow from such situations.

Desacuerdos en Actitudes. Normatividad, Desacuerdo y Polarización Afectiva (Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Spain, PID2019-109764RB-100)
Role: Researcher
Implementation period: 2020-2023
Description: This project aims to examine the relationship between the way we discuss, the affective polarization, and the drawn composition of the organs of private and public institutions whose purpose is to make decisions as a result of a deliberative process. We will study how the composition of the groups influences the increase in affective polarization within them and to what extent this increase can be related to a more significant presence of crossed disagreements, situations in which the parties show sufficient signs of conceiving the dispute they are facing in a significantly different way.

Desacuerdos Públicos, Polarización Afectiva e Inmigración en Andalucía (Junta de Andalucía, Spain, B-HUM-459-UGR18)
Role: Researcher
Implementation period: 2020-2022
Description: This project’s general objective is to examine the hypothesis that the significant presence of crossed disagreements in public discourse can be used as a factor for the early detection of affective polarization processes. In particular, we will examine the extent to which a significantly higher presence of these cross-disagreements is observed, situations in which the parties conceive differently the type of disagreement in which they are involved, concerning the population displaced against their will, to Andalusia and within Andalusia, in the Diario de Sesiones of the Andalusian Parliament during the period in which the polarization in the region about this topic increased, according to the biannual study Opinions and Attitudes of the Andalusian Population towards Immigration (OPIA), developed by the Permanent Andalusian Observatory of Migration since 2007.
